Surgical Procedures
Dr. Pasha utilizes many surgical techniques that are designed for snorers and sleep apneic patients to open their upper airway. Dr. Pasha says “no two patients are the same.” There are many different goals for sleep apnea surgery. For some, your goal may be to cure or significantly reduce your sleep apnea so that you will no longer require a CPAP machine. For others, we may be improving your sleep apnea so that you may better tolerate your CPAP at lower pressures and make it less dangerous for you if you mistakenly take a nap without your machine. For others this may be the beginning of a major lifestyle change and you may be improving your airway so you can begin an exercise and diet program to lose weight with the eventual goal of curing your sleep apnea in the near future.
After you have completed a comprehensive evaluation of your upper airway and Dr. Pasha has identified the levels of obstruction or source of snoring, you may be offered specific surgical options.
If your nasal cavity is preventing you from breathing through your nose at night or is contributing to your obstruction, you may be offered a nasal procedure such as a Septoplasty or a Partial Turbinate Reduction.
If the back of the throat is what causes most of your obstruction and is also the source of vibration when you snore, you may be offered a procedure with a long name, Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty -or simply a UP3- with possible removal of your tonsils.
If the back of the tongue is a significant cause of obstruction at night, you may also be a candidate for a Tongue Advancement or Stabilization Procedure. This technique utilizes a surgical loop to bring the back of the tongue forward, improving airflow in the back of the throat at night.
If the back of the throat (pharynx) is redundant (sags), particularly at night, it may cause airway obstruction. A Hyoid Advancement Procedure, may address this problem. In this procedure the hyoid cartilage, which is located at the upper angle of the neck, is lifted up to "stretch out" the back of the throat improving airflow.
